European Law LL.M.

(Specialisatie van Rechtsgeleerdheid)

In this master you will acquire in-depth knowledge of the increasingly integrated European legal order. You will understand how the European Union and the variety of its institutions function. Perhaps more importantly, we provide you with the necessary knowledge and tools to think critically about current legal and political developments. You will be challenged to look at the future of European integration as a whole and the way it may shape in the future.

You will study the European Union and its role in regulating economic relations. Additional courses look at the protection of fundamental rights in Europe, cooperation in areas of migration and criminal law, as well as the Union’s position in the wider world.

Why choose European Law in Leiden?

  • This programme mixes the Anglo-Saxon system with the continental EU approach. This is combined with a reallife understanding of how the European Union works, for example with study trips to Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.
  • The programme distinguishes itself by its broad intra-disciplinary approach, covering institutional, constitutional as well as internal market and competition law of the EU in addition to human rights from an EU perspective.
  • The European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC) is the most prestigious moot court for European Law and Leiden has a proud tradition of participating and winning prizes.
